Speakers' Corner (AVOIN YO)

Contents: The course deals with practicing and developing skills in spoken interaction in English. Specifically, the course offers an overview of the English sound segments, stress patterns and linking sounds as well as the pragmatics of English intonation patterns. Brief lectures will be given on the topics, and as homework, the participants will be introduced to various readings on different aspects of spoken interaction. Moreover, the course includes sessions in the language lab to practice various sounds and intonation patterns with a heightened focus on the ones with which the participants have difficulty and/or the ones that have typically been challenging for native speakers of Finnish. Further, the course introduces various in-class tasks and exercises which allow the students to practice informal and formal as well as public and nonpublic speaking with guided independent and collaborative preparation.
