For new Open University students

1. Find interesting courses on our website.
2. Enroll to studies by using the registration link in the description of the course or study module. Note that some studies are organized by cooperative educational institutions, and in these cases, the enrollment takes place through their own websites.
3. Some courses are subject to a fee and the tuition fee will be charged during registration. Pay the tuition fee as an online fee.
4. After the registration and payment, you will receive an automatic confirmation response to your email.

• The study right will be automatically granted for you after registering for a course – there is no need to apply separately.
• The study right comes into effect before the studies begin.
• If you have registered for more than one course, you may have several study rights.
• Study right lasts for three terms in study modules and two terms in individual courses. Study right begins in the term you register for the course/module.
• The University terms are
  • spring term 1.1.-31.7. and
  • autumn term 1.8.-31.12.
• You can check the duration of your study right in Peppi-system.
• In Peppi all study rights are shown individually so that each study right has its own study right number. If you have several study rights, make sure you are viewing the right one.
• You can switch the study right in Peppi by moving the mouse pointer on the profile picture icon on the right corner of student's desktop. An window will open, where you can see all your study right numbers. Click the name of the study right, and all the information you see in your Peppi will be related to that study right.

If you enroll to Open University studies of the University of Oulu for the first time:

• you will receive a University user account to your email address from the University ICT-services before the studies begin. Please note that there may be a short delay in the formation of new user accounts and the University user account starts to work only after the study right has been validated.
• Please note that user account is formed based on the study right period. The study right begins in the beginning of the period on 1.1. or 1.5. (summer studies). User account will be formed when the study right has begun and the status of the enrollment for studies is accepted.
• Set a password online via Self-service: https://account.oulu.fi/passw. In order to do that you need to have a personal Finnish online banking account, a mobile ID or Finland’s Digital and Population Data Services Agency’s certificate.
• If you don’t have access to any of these identification methods, contact helpdesk@oulu.fi. Send the message via header: "Missing password"

If you have studied in the Open University of the University of Oulu previously:

• your existing University user account and password will be activated automatically after the study right has been validated. You will not receive any separate notification regarding the activation.
• You can check the status of your user account and set a new password in Self-service: https://account.oulu.fi/
• If your user account is created before the 1st of August 2019 and you have not activated MFA-authentication, log in to O365-service and follow the instructions.

• Web-based learning environment Moodle
• Oulu University Library databases by remote

• As a university student, your email address is as a rule in form: firstname.lastname@student.oulu.fi. If there is another person with the same name in the system, one character or a string is added between the names.
• Office 365 Education is the University’s email service in the University of Oulu. Log into the service with your university Microsoft account at: https://o365.oulu.fi.
• Please note that the university email address is your primary address in all study related matters. Check your email regularly.
• Forwarding mail to external addresses is not recommended, but it is nevertheless possible. Read the instruction: Email forwarding.

• Before the studies begin, you will receive more specific information regarding the learning environment via University email.
• In the University of Oulu the most frequently used learning environment is Moodle but there may be also other learning environments in use.
• Please log in to learning environment before studies. If the learning environment of your studies is Moodle, log in with your University user account here: https://moodle.oulu.fi/.
• In the learning environment you will find more information of completing a course and other practicalities such as schedule and assignments.

• University of Oulu uses Peppi system that is a student and study information system.
• As a student you will have access to Peppi as long as your study right is active.
• Log in to Peppi with your University user account: https://www.oulu.fi/en/peppi
• As a student you can use Peppi for
  • viewing your study rights and study records,
  • ordering transcript of records,
  • changing your contact information and
  • giving course feedback.
• If you have registered for more than one course, you may have several study right numbers in Peppi.
• Make sure you are always viewing the right study right number.
• You can switch the study right by moving the mouse pointer on the profile picture icon on the right corner of student's desktop. An window will open, where you can see all your study right numbers. • Zoom is an online meeting tool and with it you can attend online lectures or keep in contact with your study group.
• Log in to Zoom here: https://oulu.zoom.us/
• You can install a Zoom app to your computer or mobile device or use it with a browser
• Use your University account to log in to Zoom. Log in with your email address and related password.

• As a University student you get access to Office 365 Education services (shortly O365/M365).
• The M365 service offers versatile tools for your use, such as:
  • Outlook
  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Teams
• The M365 service can be used
  • with a browser or
  • with desktop applications.
• You can log into the service with your university Microsoft account at:https://o365.oulu.fi.
• The access for M365 Education services is connected to your University user account. When the account closes, the right of using University information systems ends and your email address is closed. The email folders and other files are automatically removed within certain time from O365 service.

• Libraries offer several services and literature sources for students: books, magazines, databases, study spaces and guidance.
• Open University students have the same access to literature as degree students.

• Open University has also own contact person that helps students with library services and information searching matters.

• Teachers responsible for the study module will give you advice and guidance if needed related to the contents and practices of the courses.
• The Open University designers advice on the practices of Open University and the planning of studies.
• If you want more detailed information about your studies (e.g. planning your own study path, The Open University Route or other practical matters) you can also make an appointment for personal study counseling. In that case make an appointment in advance from the designer in that particular field of education.

The guidelines describe what kind of use of AI is allowed or prohibited at the University of Oulu and how it can be used responsibly to support studies. • The purpose of evaluating study attainments is to monitor the progress of a student’s studies and to gather information on the student’s learning process and learning outcomes.
• The assessment of study attainments is based on the learning outcomes and assessment criteria defined in the curricula.
• A numerical scale from 0 to 5 (in integers), or a verbal assessment with the grades pass and fail is used in the assessment of study attainments.
• You can view your completed credits on Transcript of study records -page in Peppi. If you can not find the right study records, change the study right that you are operating in Peppi.

• If you need an official, signed version of the transcript of records, you can download one free of charge in Peppi ATOMI-service.
• You can download it as long as your study right is active.

After your study right has ended

• You can browse your completed studies in The My study info-service maintained by the Finnish National Agency for Education.
• Please note that My Studyinfo service displays the status of Open University students’ study rights as incomplete. Nevertheless, the course completion is final.
• You can also order a transcript in Open University by filling this form.

• Open University students can give course feedback in Peppi.
• In order to give course feedback, you have to make sure you are viewing the right study right number in Peppi.
