Study related practises and instructions

The fees charged for Open University studies are based on the Government Regulation on fees for Universities (199/2024). The fee collected by the Universities can be a maximum of 45 euros per ECTS.

The fee includes

• study right for paid studies
• study counseling and guidance
• the exams
• registration of student and credit information, transcripts of records
• ICT services and Library services

Extra fees may be charged based on special course material or teaching methods. (This is mentioned in course curriculum)

Tuition fee is based on extention of the studies. Tuition fee is paid during the enrollment.

The fees for Academic year 2024-2025 are

• Basic study module 25 ECTS, 275 €
• Advanced study module 35 ECTS, 525 €
• Single course 15 €/ ECTS

If there are any exceptions to study fees it is mentioned in course description. Some of the studies may be free of charge.

Avoimen yliopisto-opetuksen maksut ovat julkisoikeudellisina saatavina perintäkelpoisia.

Single courses

Course fee will not be returned after enrollment. The fee will only be returned if the student cannot execute studied for a very serioud reason, like medical reason.

Study modules

Student can cancel enrollment for study module free of charge latest 14 days before the start of studies. After that there will be a 50 euros cancellation fee. The course fee of study module will be returned excess 50 euro will be returned until the start of studies. If the student cancels enrollment after the start of studies excess 50 euro and the course fee of the courses that have started.

The fee will be returned if student has a very heavy reason like medical reason to cancel the studies. If there is a limit for maximum participants at the study module the whole fee will be charged.

Cancellation of enrollment

You can cancel your enrollment by sending email to our service desk: avoin.yliopisto@oulu.fi

If the course is cancelled by the Open University, the whole tuition fee will be returned.

Returnings of the fee

The fees charged at the returnings of the fee, see above.

Send you request for returning of the fee to the Open University service desk: avoin.yliopisto@oulu.fi.

We will need the following information:

• Header: Returning of the tuition fee
• Your contact info: name, address, phone number
• Payment info: bank account, name and address of the bank or mention if you want to change your enrollment for another course
• Payment ID, at the receipt or/and confirmation of enrollment
• Reason for the cancellation (optional)

The returnings of the fee will usually be handled in 14 days. During the holiday seasons the handling time may be longer.

Check your information

• You must give the correct personal and contact info at the enrolling. It is your obligation to check if the info is correct.
• If there are any incorrects at the info you gave you must contact avoin.yliopisto@oulu.fi as soon as possible and correct the wrong info.

Follow the instructions and good practices

You must follow

• Instructions concerning teaching and studying at the University of Oulu
• Ethical principles of education
• Good academic practices
• Terms of use of all systems and learning environments used at the studies

You are obligated to

• Find out what is seen as a misconduct in studies. If you are not sure, ask your teacher
• Inform the teacher if you see or suspect any cheating at the studies or examinations

Student commitment

You are expected to

• participate actively
• Follow the given instructions and timtables
• Follow the progression of your studies
• Give relevant feedback to you teacher

If you are unable to attend the course or give in assignments at given time, you should be in contact to the teacher beforehand and as early as possible to get extra time.

• check that all your study records are correct in the system

Recognition of learning (RL) refers to set practices that can be used to assess the learning of the student and to approve that learning as part of the student’s studies. The student always has the initiative in launching the RL process. You can read more about the RL here.

Accessibility refers to the ways in which physical, psychological and social environments are designed to ensure that everyone can interact with others on an equal basis despite their individual characteristics.

In certain circumstances a student may apply for individual arrangements for study attainments and evaluation.

The attending degree student of the University of Oulu must primarily participate in the teaching intended for degree students offered by their own faculty.

The attending degree student may attend free of charge to Open University studies for a very good reason if there are any room for degree students. The Open University studies must be included to your Personal Study Plan and your degree. The faculty decides if you have a good reason to attend Open University studies or not.
