Water and Wastewater Treatment (OPEN UNI)

The required prerequisite is the completion of the following course or to have corresponding knowledge prior to enrolling for the course unit: 477013P Introduction to Process and Environmental Engineering (previously 477011P and 488010P).

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to understand the theory and practicalities behind the most used purification processes in water and wastewater treatment. The student will also be capable of performing basic dimensioning calculations and therefore will be able to dimension structures/units of water and wastewater treatment plants and comprehend the basic requirements of different purification processes.

The course can be completed in two different study modes: A) Active mode: midterm exam based on reading material + completion of 2 group exercises + final exam based on lectures and exercises; - For active mode, students must attend lectures at their specific time and at the campus (mostly) (65% attendance min). - Participate in the exercises and return within the deadlines. Grade is made of the average of 2 course exercises, plus id midterm exam and final exam. B) Passive mode (book exam): 100% self-study mode where the student is provided with 2-3 reference books and attends an exam based on the provided material. (Passive mode can be completed under special circumstances) - Grade for passive mode students is based on 1 EXAM. The exam can be taken at any time, which can be agreed upon with the teacher. Exams can also be completed using the e-exam systems or other supervised setups. Material (books) is provided as a reference. Students study on their own and come for the exam. - As a support, teacher offer the opportunity for passive mode students to have access to the active course lecture materials and the exercises during the time the course is ongoing. Exercises can be completed by a passive mode student, and teacher can provide tutoring. However, exercises do not contribute to the grade and are only a tool for learning. Passive mode students who take the opportunity to follow the active mode timetable do not have an attendance requirement for the lectures and can attend when possible or not at all. Mix of guided self-study work, face-to-face and video conference teaching sections and field visits (when viable). Lectures (30 h), field visits (5 h), exercises and other assignments (60 h) and self-study (40 h).
