Sociocultural Contexts of Education (OPEN UNI), The Summer University of Northern Ostrobothnia

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• use the central concepts of social sciences in educational research and analyze the related basic issues in various contexts of education and growth
• identify, among other things, the significance of social status and gender in the discussion related to education and schooling (incl. intersectionality)
• apply the multicultural, legal, social and responsibility-related issues of upbringing and education in different situations of everyday life and in their professional interactions, both as a student and in working life
• describe the historical, socio-political and professional starting points of Finnish education system.

Common generic skills of the University of Oulu in this course:

• Well-being and self-development: Students recognize the key factors in their well-being and self-management, develop their professional identity and skills, and promote group learning.
• Internationality and multiculturalism: Students recognize cultural diversity and stereotypes and know how to act constructively in multicultural environments.

Online teaching. The course is implemented in Moodle learning environment. Lectures and other contact teaching 24 h, independent working 111 h.

Learning activities are composed of studying lectures (contact/online/recorded) and their materials, course literature, and carrying out the learning task (e.g., essay), which combines the contents of lectures, course literature and the phenomena of student’s own life-world experiences. The learning task is sketched in Moodle workspace of the course, together with the support and guidance by peer students and teacher.

The adoption of learning outcomes is measured by learning task (e.g., essay), which combines the contents of lectures, course literature and the phenomena of student’s own life-world experiences.

Assessment criteria are:

• 0 = Based on the work, it cannot be concluded that the learning outcomes have been achieved. The content of the work is fragmented and is not essentially related to the subject area and contents of the course.
• 1 = The learning outcomes of the course have been tolerably achieved. In the work the contents of the course have been covered very superficially and in scattered manner. The use of references is weak.
• 2 = The learning outcomes of the course have been satisfactorily achieved. In the work the contents of the course have been dealt with somewhat superficially, and the connections between things remain to some extent unclear and independent reflection to some extent incomplete. The use of references is mostly satisfactory.
• 3 = The learning outcomes of the course have been well achieved. In the work the contents of the course are well managed, and the handling of the contents is reflective and well related to each other. The use of references is mainly in good level and in accordance with the instructions.
• 4 = The learning outcomes of the course have been achieved in an obviously commendable manner. The handling of the contents of the course is somewhat analytical and systematically managed, including well-founded independent thinking, also showing mastery of general academic skills. The use of references is mostly very good.
• 5 = The learning outcomes of the course and more general academic learning outcomes have been achieved excellently. The contents of the course are managed very well, and the handling of the contents of the course is structured and analytical, including justified, appropriate, and critical self-reflection. The use of references is mostly excellent.
