Servitisation, Co-creation and Business Development (OPEN UNI)

The recommended, but not mandatory, prerequisite is that the learning outcomes of the following courses and their predecessors are accomplished: Digitalisation and Innovation.

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

• develop software business in new businesses and established businesses,
• conduct market analysis to estimate the market potential for the business,
• apply the basics of financial calculation,
• understand differences in business models,
• understand the concept of servitization, as well as
• understand the concept of co-creation.

The student can choose between participation in guided exercises (which are arranged on Campus and/or in Zoom) and a self-study option without participation to guided exercises. Also in the self-study option the student works in a team with other students. It is possible to complete the course without coming to the Campus (fully online).

Course book, scientific articles, pre-recorded lecture videos

The student completes weekly quizzes about pre-recorded lectures and other reading material. In addition, the student writes a business plan together with a team of other students, peer-reviews another team's business plan, and presents their own business plan. The student also writes a "home exam essay" about a set of pre-defined scientific articles.

Numerical scale 1-5 or fail

The first assignment deadline is already a couple of days after the course has started. Additional information will be sent shortly before the start of the course and during the course to the email address the student has in Peppi (usually their university of oulu email address). Students are expected to read their emails regularly (daily) and are assumed to have read all information sent to them by email.

Assessment criteria: The final grade is composed of the evaluations of the weekly lecture and reading material quizzes (individual), Business plan and presentation of the business plan (teamwork), peer reviews (individual), and a home exam essay (individual). Additional assignments may be specified upon start of the course.

Timing The course is held in the autumn semester, during period 2.
