Methodology of theoretical and philosophical research (AVOIN YO)

Prerequisites: Basic Studies in Education

It is recommended that the students have completed the course Theoretical Foundations of Education (411005A) before enrolling in this course.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to

• read and analyse academic texts on the field of educational philosophy from a methodological perspective
• recognize central methodological tools used in educational philosophy and reflect on their relevance in relation to their research interest
• understand the potential of theoretical-philosophical research in multidisciplinary research projects
• articulate their methodological thinking through writing.

The lectures (16 hours) will be held partly as hybrid lectures and partly as distance learning via Zoom. Lecture recordings will be published on Moodle.

All course literature is available either as a printed or as an e-book version in OulaFinna. An accompanying reading list for the lectures will be provided at the beginning of the course.

Completing the course requires

1. doing a preliminary assignment in Moodle
2. attending lectures, and
3. keeping a reading diary of the course literature (8–12 pages).

During the course, students will write a reading diary on the course literature, which will be assessed on a scale of 1–5. The lectures, discussions and the preliminary assignment will prepare the ground for this writing process. More detailed assessment criteria can be found in Moodle.
