Introduction to studying English at the University of Oulu (OPEN UNI)

Prerequisites and co-requisites There are no required prerequisites or co-requisites for this course.

Recommended optional programme components The course is an independent entity, and it does not require additional studies carried out at the same time.

Upon completing the course, students are able to recognize and describe the five key areas of study in the subject of English at the University of Oulu:

• Culture
• Language studies
• Language learning and teaching
• Literature
• Professional language work Students have developed an understanding of how those key areas that form the basis of teaching within the unit, and know the general principles and practicalities of studying in the unit.

Mode of delivery The course is taught in an online learning environment and consists of web-based distance learning. Video lectures 3 h + self-study 51 h, e.g. online assignments, reading and writing tasks.

Students will complete online assignments and writing tasks that they will submit in the learning environment. The assignments will be assessed based on submission. The assessment is based on the learning outcomes of the course.

The course utilizes the verbal grading scale of “pass/fail”.

Language of instruction English

Timing The course is available online throughout the year. It is recommended that the students complete the course before they commence studies in English at the University of Oulu.

Target group The target group of the course consists of upper secondary school (lukio) students, students of vocational schools and universities of applied sciences, and students at the University of Oulu majoring in other subjects with an interest in English as an academic field of study.
