Foreign Language (English) (OPEN UNI), The Summer University of Northern Ostrobothnia

Required proficiency level:

Students are expected to have had English as their A1 or A2 language at school or have acquired equivalent skills. If you need to take English but lack this background, please get in touch with the contact teacher for the course to discuss individual solutions.

Objectives:

• to develop students' English language skills needed for effective communication on different topics related to education and teaching

• to practice comprehending and producing oral presentations and written texts using formal or semi-formal English

• to use digital tools to support their language learning.

Learning outcomes - by the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:

• interpret and discuss formal or semi-formal texts on topics related to the field of education

• discuss topics related to the field of education

• write assignments on topics related to education and teaching

• search for information on a chosen educational theme as well as analyse and explain the ideas

• better communicate with parents / colleagues of foreign backgrounds.

The course is implemented using blended methods, which may include classroom instruction, remote teaching and activities in the Moodle learning environment.

• 28 hrs of contact teaching + 52 hrs of independent study.
• Lessons on campus and/or remotely, online studies, individual assignments, pair and group activities, an oral presentation and homework tasks.
• The course assignments and activities aim to promote transversal competences such as critical thinking, self-regulated learning, and interaction.

Course materials will be provided by the teacher in electronic format.

Regular participation in all contact teaching and completion of all required coursework (a policy of 100% participation in lessons, with compensatory work in case of occasional absence).
