The course aims to deepen the students’ knowledge of classic literary works and to further improve their skills in literary analysis. It also gives practical knowledge on the methodological possibilities of literary research. Upon completing the course, students will be more familiar with classic literary works and their main features. They will also be able to demonstrate skills in analysing the structures of narrative fiction, poetry and drama. They will be able to consider which methods of analysis and interpretation of literary texts can be applied to each case.

Mode of delivery:
A study course (taught in Finnish), which includes supervised group work, for students majoring in Literature and for students majoring in Finnish and Saami who are planning to apply to teacher programme. Written examination/article/working in small groups for other subsidiary subject students. Discussion in small groups led by a teacher, exercises.

For a list of fiction, contact the teacher. Mandatory introductory texts regarding the basic concepts of literary analysis (including poetry and drama) as well as research literature for students participating in the practicum or writing an essay.

The course focuses on the analysis and interpretation of literature by studying the classic works of modern literature (narrative fiction as well as poetry and drama). A number of short research texts considering those works will also be studied. The taught course involves a written analysis, which should be an interpretative text using tools of literary analysis and should resemble a short article (with references) rather than essay. In the assignment, students should utilise the above-mentioned research texts. The assignment will be prepared during the course.

The assessment of the taught course focuses on the application of concepts in written texts and other practical assignments as well as in discussions; the use of research literature; the textual and contextual relevance of conclusions; the appropriateness, multidimensionality, and structure of reflections; dialogical contribution to the group; and active participation. Similar criteria are applied in the assessment of other forms of performance.
