Ethics (OPEN UNI)

Has completed or is completing primary school multidisciplinary studies.

Having completed the study unit the student is able to

• recognize and understand the basic principles, general goals and values of the curriculum in ethics
• recognize central issues within transversal skills and phenomenon based learning
• recognize the unique characteristics of ethics
• understand and have a good hold of the nature and subject matter of ethics
• is able to apply and implement the goals and content of the curriculum in one’s teaching practice with a view of the transversal competences
• is able to apply different teaching methods in varying study environments in line with the unique nature of ethics
• is able to apply principles of evaluation outlined in the curriculum and to assess the place of evaluation in students’ learning process and their supervision
• is able to critically evaluate the subject content and underlying values of ethics within the curriculum

Form of study: Remote teaching. Lectures 4 h, small group teaching 12 h and independent study 30 h.

Relevant literature is agreed upon in the beginning of the study unit.

The successful completion of the study unit consists of active participation in contact teaching and completing independent study both individually and in groups. The assignment for independent study may be in the form of a group presentation, learning diary, essay, teaching video, oral presentation or any other work agreed upon with the teacher. The teacher agrees on the form of evaluation and evaluation criteria with the students in the beginning of the study unit.

The learning criteria include sufficient knowledge and skills in the following areas:

• position of religious education and ethics in today's society and being able to apply the related legislation in one's teaching
• relevant guiding principles of the curriculum
• didactic and pedagogical grasp of teaching ethics on an academic level
• applying didactic teaching models into practice in one's teaching
• forming one's own teacher identity for teaching ethics

Language of instruction: Finnish

Target group: Students of class teacher programmes of primary school education, students who have a right of study for primary school multidisciplinary studies and students who have a right of study for the study unit from the Open University of Oulu.

The complementary studies in ethics are directed at those students who work as class teachers in primary school and want to teach ethics to their class.
